Hebron Rose (زهرة الخليل)

 

The ‘rosette’ is one of the oldest motifs found in the textile arts. It is very common in Palestinian embroidery and resembles textile designs found in Eastern Europe. There are different versions of this flower motif in Palestinian embroidery (Tatreez). 

This stemmed flower motif is typical of the Hebron (الخليل) area, one of the oldest continuously inhabited areas of Palestine - in fact in the world. Located about twenty miles south of Jerusalem, Hebron (الخليل) is known for its hilly landscape renowned for vineyards and grapes. It is one of the areas richest in cultural traditions and heritage.

Despite its rich identity markers, religious motifs are absent in tatreez, reflecting Palestine's harmonious coexistence of people from various faiths. The vibrant palette of colors serves as a coded indication of life stages, with young women in Hebron wearing green and older women opting for purple. The embroidery's hues also capture regional distinctions, emphasizing the deep local connections embedded in every thread.
