Watermelon Mug – A Symbol of Solidarity
In Palestine, the watermelon has long stood as a symbol of resistance. Its red, green, black, and white mirror the Palestinian flag — colours that were banned from public use by Israeli military forces after 1967. In 1980, three artists were arrested in Ramallah for using these colours in their work. When one of them, Issam Badr, asked if even a watermelon would be confiscated, the officer confirmed: “Even if you do a watermelon, it will be confiscated.” Since then, the watermelon has quietly and powerfully become a symbol of Palestinian resilience.
These mugs bring that story into your home. Each one is cast by hand using liquid clay and fired to 1100°C. The exterior is a warm beige, painted with half-cut watermelons, and finished with a black handle.
Inside, they’re glazed in a deep royal blue—recalling the waters of the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea. The contrast between the interior and exterior is intentional: a small reminder of land and water, of movement and return, and of solidarity across distance.
Made to be used every day, these mugs carry a message—of resistance, of memory, and of standing together across borders.
